Watch Tibetans Compete in Horse Racing in Yushu, Kham, Tibet

Tibetan Horse Racing is an individualized sport in the sports world. Yushu Horse Racing Festival is not only a main tourist attraction but also a living link to the traditions of the ancient Kingdom of Kham. Tibetans from all over the Kham region gather here for traditional sports, song, dance, and costume competitions. Therefore Yushu is also known as the Cultural Center of Kham. Yushu Horse Racing Festival is held in Yushu Autonomous Region of Qinghai Province from 25th July of every year. Other highlights of this week-long tour are visiting the giant panda park in Chengdu, Ganay Mani, Rock Painting, Trago Monastery, and a Sky Burial site.

What to Expect

Location: Yushu with 3,700m (12,136ft) the sea level.

Driving: Many people drive from Xining to Yushu, which takes about 12-16 hours depending on fast you drive. We do not recommend driving unless you make the drive part of your tour in two days.

Airport: Yushu Batang airport is located 18 kilometers to the south of the city center with 3,890m. Airport was officially opened on August 1st, 2009.

Hike: Short hiking around Princess Wencheng’s temple is offering if the group would like to do the hike mutually.

Itinerary

Day 1-2Chengdu & Acclimatization

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and is famed for its Sichuanese cuisine, especially the hot pot. This is an excellent opportunity for visitors to taste the local flavors of Sichuan. Chengdu is also home to the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a conservation center where you can view the endangered giant pandas in their natural habitat. Day 3Yushu

Yushu is a Tibetan autonomous Prefecture of southwest Qinghai Province, China and largely inhabited by Tibetans. Yushu is about 839 km from Chengdu and 800 km southwest of Xining by land. This area is rich in minerals and forest resources and has vast grasslands that cover the high mountains and deep valleys. It’s also a treasure trove of colorful Tibetan culture. Kyegu or Jiegu is the capital of Yushu Autonomous Prefecture and Yushu is considered as the Kham’s cultural center. Elevation of Yushu is 3,689 m (12,103 ft).

Day 4Yushu Horse Racing/ Gyana Mani and Rock Paintings

Yushu Horse Racing is presenting the best kept ancient tradition of Tibet. The event is inaugurate with traditional Tibetan dance and song by the local people on the wide meadow. The event offers us beautiful view of grasslands and nomadic life. People from all the areas near the Yushu will gather in their best dresses and ornament showcasing Khampa’s costume beautifully. We can also visit the mani wall which is founded in 1715. Overnight in Yushu

Day 5Yushu Horse Racing/Princess Wencheng Temple

Continue exploring Yushu horse racing and yak racing with crowds. Mingling with hustle bustle local people and experiencing authentic culture. We can visit Princess Wencheng’s temple and do a little hiking too. Overnight in Yushu

Day 6Yushu Horse Racing/Trago Monastery and Sky Burial site

Horse racing exploration and enjoying many other programs like Tibetan wrestling, Tibetan songs and dances, traditional costume show and many more. We can also visit Trago monastery and visit sky burial site,which is one of the most renowned spiritual place in Yushu. Before taking photos and all, do consider local expert’s suggestion.
