Live With Tibetan Nomads in Kham, Tibet
Tibetan nomads are recognized as some of the world’s people with the most endurance. They live in yak-hair tents, herd yaks, and co-exist in harmony with nature. However, in the name of rapid economic development, Tibetans nomads are quickly disappearing. Our nomad homestay provides a unique insight to the nomadic family way of life by living with them, learning about their lifestyle, understanding their real challenges, and recognizing what nomads have to offer as well. While the Tibetan Plateau offers a variety of nomadic grasslands, we have personally chosen to develop relationships with a few families who wish to host guests in their home.
Chatue is a 32-year-old son of a three-generation nomadic family from Yoloshi, which is the basecamp of famous Minyak Gangkar Mountain in the eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau. His family herds about 200 dri (dri is female yak). They have a winter home, which is built in traditional Tibetan style, and in the summer live in a black tent, which is made from yak hair.
As a way of earning supplemental income, Chatue has been working with Conscious Journeys as a driver and host as we take our guests for adventurous nomadic cultural experiences. Guests have the option of staying in a black tent or a home. Both facilities have comfortable beds, hot showers, and home-cooked meals. Chatue’s home is ideal for nomadic homestay experiences, and it offers spectacular views and hiking opportunities. In addition, you have options of visiting nearby Gongkar Monastery, riding mountain bikes if you like, or trekking on horseback. It takes about 2 days to drive by car from Chengdu to Chatue’s home.
Enjoy an authentic Tibetan homestay with a verified, trusted and experienced family by Conscious Journeys in Tibet. You will learn first-hand from the local Tibetans about their culture, history, customs, and traditions in the intimacy of their homes and daily lives.
