Tour Details

Our company is founded on the idea of “getting more out by giving more to local communities.” Our travelers experience just that. We customize several unique service journeys for all ages, skills set, and fitness level from a few days to 2 weeks. They include dental missions, medical missions, general volunteer missions, and programs for high school and college students, along with homestay experiences.

Most of our medical missions take places in Kham &Amdo (outside of TAR due to the policy restriction) and our small team generally consist of medical doctors, nurses, and hygienists along with two or three assistants. Throughout the trip, we set up several medical camps in different villages and the team provides essential medical services for free of charge.

Our partner sister organization, Tibetan Village Project has identified medical treatment and prevention focus around hygiene, sanitation, parasitic diseases, women’s health; TB (tuberculosis), and HIV/AIDS.While diagnosing and treating of patients is an essential part of this mission, we focus more on prevention by designing and piloting mobile hands-on health education for local community members.

In an ideal situation, we would like to work with a group of volunteer medical professional group over a period of 1-3 years, where we can organize one or two Tibet trips annually. This would allow us to focus on eliminating one or two diseases in a community, instead of having just a one-time camp. Then we would have a more predictable program.

What to Expect

The government often requires us to work with a Tibet Travel Agency to handle all logistics, including Chinese Visa and local travel permits. Conscious Journeys specialize in this kind of coordination. As for the most of our Service Journeys, travelers volunteer their time, and our partner NGO normally raises fund forthe direct project cost such as medical supplies, and educational materials. Please understandthat donors generally do not want use their donations being usedto cover travel expense of volunteers. Thus, you are expected to cover our own travel cost or raise fund as part of your contribution to the project.

  • Drive up to the Tibetan Plateau as a way of adjusting the altitude gradually
  • Enjoy 3-star hotel in urban areas and homestay in rural areas
  • Immerse with culture by staying with Tibetan family as you travel
  • Enjoy home cooked and restaurant meals
  • Travel with an English-speaking guide and a staff from local NGO
  • Ask us to send a project report of a past medical mission trip
  • Work with us to develop a project plan after you are able to commit volunteering
Sample Itinerary

Like with most of our Service Journeys, Medical Mission is a customized trip. We work withour local NGO partnersidentify specific needs for a specific location. We generally secure commitment from volunteers first about a year aheadand then work together to develop a project plan which includes project location, activities and itinerary. This allows us to deliver a need based solution and our partner NGOs have time to raise fund for the direct project cost. Here is a sample a 2-week itinerary.

Day 1 - 3Traveling to project site and preparation

Day 4 - 9Medical services in a few villages

Day 10 - 12Cultural excursion

Day 13 - 14Traveling back to city to catch flight back home

Add-on Excursion Options

We are different than most of the travel companies that offer more of the same tourist trips. Our journeys are centered around service, people, and culture that provide authentic Tibet travel experiences in villages where we have a great relationship with local communities. Since traveling to Tibet is once a lifetime opportunity for most people, our trip participants often go on an extended trip to other parts of Tibet such as Lhasa for a few nights to experience more popular places like Potala Palace or Jokhang Temple. Explore Add-on Tibet Trips and let us know if this is something that you would like to do.
