Tour Details

Our company is founded on the idea of “getting more out by giving more to local communities” and our travelers experience just that. We customize unique service journeys for all ages, skills set, and fitness level from a few days to 2 weeks. They include dental missions, medical missions, general volunteer missions, and programs for high school and college students, along with homestay experiences.

Like with most of our Service Journeys, Dental Mission is a customized trip. Our service program primarily operates in remote villages in Kham and Amdo, regions are currently known as Sichuan, Qinghai, and Yunnan Provinces. Our dental team generally consist of general dentists, orthopedic surgeons, and dental hygienists along with two or three assistants.

In the remote and impoverished areas of rural Tibet, dental care is virtually non-existent. Some see it as luxurious treatment, and others don’t understand the negative impact on people’s health. For example, tooth infections cause many sleepless nights, and people often end up in a faraway hospital in Mainland China with unmanageable expenses.

What to Expect

We generally secure the commitment from volunteers first about a year ahead and then work together to develop a project plan which includes project location, activities, and itinerary. In an ideal situation, we prefer to work with a volunteer dental professional group over a period of 1-3 years, where we can organize one or two Tibet trips annually. This allows us to deliver a need based solution while building a more sustainable dental program in partnership with local NGOs and communities in Tibet. For example, train locals and possibly build a dental clinic.

The government often requires us to work with a Tibet Travel Agency to handle all logistics, including Chinese Visa and local travel permits and Conscious Journeys is specialized in this kind of coordination. As for the most of our Service Journeys, traveler volunteers their time and observe their own travel expense. We work with local communities to raises fund for the direct project cost such as dental supplies and equipment via crowdfunding.

Add-on Excursion Options

We are different than most of the travel companies that offer more of the same tourist trips. Our journeys are centered around service, people, and culture that provide authentic Tibet travel experiences in villages where we have a great relationship with local communities. Since traveling to Tibet is once a lifetime opportunity for most people, our trip participants often go on an extended trip to other parts of Tibet such as Lhasa for a few nights to experience more popular places like Potala Palace or Jokhang Temple. Explore Add-on Tibet Trips and let us know if this is something that you would like to do.
